Hungarian European Commissioner Cannot Block Ukraine's EU Accession Negotiations - Stefanishyna

Thursday, 1 December 2022

Ukraine's government does not see any risks that the Hungarian leadership can pressure the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, to block Ukraine's path to EU membership.

As the correspondent of "European Pravda" reports, Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, has stated this at the Kyiv Security Forum.

"The European commissioner for Enlargement has surely considerable authority. However, the decision on Ukraine's implementation of the seven necessary requirements will be made by other, specialised European commissioners. Olivér Várhelyi will only summarise their conclusions in one document. Again, the final decision will be made by the EU political leadership - all member state leaders," the Deputy Prime Minister explains.

European Pravda reported about the Hungarian commissioner, as Kyiv convinced, aims at stopping Ukraine's progress towards membership at any cost. Moldova also indirectly suffers from this, which is in the same integration package as Ukraine, which may cause instability in Moldova created by Russia. If it comes true, the EU will suffer a large-scale geopolitical defeat, reads the article Hungary's Spoke in the Wheel. How Brussels Slows Down Ukraine's and Moldova's EU Accession.

One of the draft documents of the European Parliament has already included a paragraph that raises suspicion of Olivér Várhelyi's bias towards the candidate countries and calls for an appropriate investigation by the European Commission into his behavior. However, a positive vote in the responsible foreign affairs committee is not a guarantee that such a decision will be supported by the entire European Parliament.
