Switzerland Imposed Sanctions on Wagner Group

Thursday, 20 April 2023

On Thursday, April 20th, Switzerland announced the sanctions against the private military company Wagner.

According to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research of Switzerland, the Russian news agency RIA "FAN", which belongs to the owner of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was also included in the sanctions.

On April 13th, the EU sanctioned the private military company "Wagner" and the Russian news agency "FAN", associated with Kremlin oligarch Yevgeniy Prigozhin, to the sanctions list.

As noted in the EU decision, the Wagner PMC is actively involved in Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.

"Thus, the Wagner Group is responsible for material support for actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine," the decision said.

It is noted that RIA "FAN" is involved in pro-government propaganda and disinformation on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, calling it a mission to stop "Ukrainian Nazis" and promoting the actions of the Wagner PMC.

The European Union imposed sanctions against Yevgeniy Prigozhin in October 2020 (Ukr) for financing the activities of the Wagner PMC in Libya. In April 2022, sanctions were imposed against Prigozhin again (Ukr) due to the aggressive war in Ukraine.
