Ukrainian Flag Flying among EU Flags at European Commission on Europe Day

Tuesday, 9 May 2023

The Ukrainian flag has been raised at the European Commission building on Europe Day.

The European Commission announced on its official Twitter account that "today, we are flying the Ukrainian flag in the heart of Europe" to celebrate Europe Day and show solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

They added that Europe was by Ukraine's side when Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, and they will stand by the Ukrainian people for as long as it takes.

This year, Ukraine celebrates Europe Day together with the European Union for the first time on May 9. This holiday is celebrated by the EU on the day of the announcement of the so-called Schuman Declaration, made by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950. This speech is considered the starting point for the unification of European countries into a supranational community, which eventually became the European Union.

Previously, this holiday was celebrated on the third Saturday of May in Ukraine. However, in the spring of 2003, President Leonid Kuchma changed the date to avoid angering the pro-Russian fifth column if the holiday was celebrated on the "European" May 9.
