Moldova's President Shares Her Plans to Assist with Ukrainian Grain Transit

Friday, 18 August 2023

Moldova's President, Maia Sandu, has stated that her country has offered assistance with the transit of Ukrainian grain since the beginning of the conflict. Currently, Moldova is trying to find a solution that will satisfy local farmers and help Kyiv.

Sandu now describes the situation with Ukrainian grain as a "complex issue."

"We are trying to find a solution. Discussions are taking place with Ukraine, Romania, and the European Commission to see how we can align the interests of Moldovan farmers while also facilitating this grain transit from Ukraine. We are obligated to help Ukraine, which is currently ensuring our peace," President Sandu noted in an interview with RFI.

According to her, Moldova will seek the best solution for both sides.

One such solution, as Sandu mentioned, is rapid investments in transportation and port infrastructure to increase capacity during this period.

"Because we want to boost our exports, we want to develop our infrastructure, and we can do that, particularly with the resources of the European Union," she added.

Sandu spoke about the issue faced by Moldovan farmers, who even before the conflict in Ukraine lacked sufficient export opportunities.

"It must be acknowledged that the railway and port infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova are not sufficiently developed. Now, with these large volumes coming from Ukraine, the situation has become more complicated," Sandu noted.

Earlier, it was reported that the United States is negotiating with Türkiye, Ukraine, and a number of its neighbours about expanding the use of alternative export routes for Ukrainian grain.
