Media reports say Sweden wants to sell Ukraine 120 Gripen aircraft

Wednesday, 22 October 2025 —

Sweden wants to sell Ukraine a large number of the latest version of the JAS 39 Gripen E aircraft.

According to Swedish TV channel TV4 Nyheterna, the expected number is 120 units.

This means that this sale will be twice as large as Sweden's largest to date.

The information suggests that Sweden can currently sell just over 10 units of the Gripen C/D.

The JAS 39 Gripen E is the latest version of the Swedish fighter jet developed by the Saab company. The model has a more powerful engine, longer range and more advanced radar and electronics than previous versions.

Shortly before 13:00 on 22 October, Volodymyr Zelenskyy landed at Linköping Airport. He is visiting Sweden, and Ulf Kristersson welcomed him in Linköping.

During the meeting, the leaders of the two countries are expected to discuss Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine and the deepening of defence cooperation between the countries.

The visit will also be attended by Minister for Energy and Entrepreneurship Ebba Busch, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Defence Paul Jonsson and Minister for Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson.

Sweden recently allocated €35 million through the World Bank to help Ukraine as winter approaches.
