Danish PM: US seizure of Greenland would mean end of NATO

Tuesday, 6 January 2026 —

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen believes that a possible forcible seizure of Greenland by the US would bring the North Atlantic Alliance to an end.

"(If the US decides to attack another NATO country by military means – ed.) then everything will come to an end. Including our NATO and therefore the security that has been ensured since the end of the Second World War," Frederiksen said in a comment to the Danish broadcaster TV2.

Frederiksen added that she is doing everything possible to prevent this.

"I believe in democracy and the international rules of the game. And I also believe that borders cannot be changed in one way or another," Frederiksen concluded.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump reiterated in an interview with The Atlantic about US actions in Venezuela that he wants to control Greenland.

He repeated his comments about the island while speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One, saying the US needs to control Greenland.

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland urged Trump to stop the pressure and threats.

White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said on 5 January that the US is a "superpower" and will behave accordingly like a "superpower".
