Over 70% of Ukrainians rate Trump's presidency negatively

Wednesday, 7 January 2026 —

An overwhelming majority of Ukrainians view Donald Trump's presidency as negative for Ukraine.

According to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), respondents were asked whether it was good or bad for Ukraine that Trump is the US president. In response, 74% said it was "bad".

In May-June, 72% held this view, meaning the situation has changed little.

Just 14% believe Trump's presidency is good for Ukraine, down from 16% previously.

The survey also shows that compared with the end of 2024, trust in the United States and NATO has declined significantly, while the European Union continues to be trusted by a majority of respondents.

The poll was conducted by KIIS between 26 November and 29 December using telephone interviews. A total of 1,001 respondents took part. The survey covered adult citizens of Ukraine who were residing, at the time of the poll, in territory controlled by the Ukrainian government. Under normal circumstances, the statistical margin of error for a sample of this size does not exceed 4.1%.

It is worth noting that the final text of the Paris Declaration approved following the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris on 6 January did not include a reference to US commitments to support multinational forces in Ukraine in the event of a renewed Russian invasion (a clause that had appeared in the draft). In addition, the United States is not formally a signatory to the document.
