Ukrainian ambassador names top six contributors to US arms purchases for Kyiv

Alona Hetmanchuk, Ukraine's ambassador to NATO, has listed the countries that have made the largest contributions to the purchase of critically needed US weapons for Ukraine, including air defence systems, under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) mechanism.

As reported by European Pravda, Hetmanchuk confirmed that the distribution of assistance to Ukraine among NATO member states is uneven, with several leading countries covering a disproportionately large share of the costs.

"The leading contributor to PURL is Norway. The second-largest donor is the Netherlands, followed by Germany. Three other countries are very close behind – Canada, Sweden and Denmark," she said, speaking to journalists in Brussels ahead of a NATO ministerial meeting, which Ukraine has also been invited to attend.

According to Hetmanchuk, these leading states have raised concerns about the fair distribution of financial contributions, which remains a challenge for the programme's funding. However, they remain willing to continue supporting Ukraine.

"These top six countries effectively form the backbone of PURL funding. Others have also made significant contributions. These countries clearly understand that it is Ukraine alone that they would be punishing by failing to support PURL – civilians in the rear enduring extreme cold under relentless attacks, and Ukrainian troops holding the front line," the diplomat explained.

Despite issues with Greenland, NATO member states are prepared to fund purchases of US arms for Ukrainian forces.

Meanwhile, additional countries are expected to join in the purchase of US weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine as early as this week.

The Alliance has also fully revised its role in assisting Ukraine, with 80% of weapons now supplied to Kyiv through NATO channels.
