Zelenskyy: Minsk and Moscow are considering joint military drills in Belarus

Monday, 23 February 2026 —

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Moscow and Minsk are once again talking about joint military drills on the territory of Belarus.

Zelenskyy recalled in an interview with Belarusian independent media outlet Zerkalo (Mirror) that when Russia and Belarus held "very large-scale" drills, the offensive into Ukraine began.

"I know that they are talking about military drills together with Russia on the territory of Belarus. Again. We will see how large they will be," he said.

Zelenskyy stressed that all this poses major risks for Ukraine.

"And, I believe, major risks for Belarusians," he added.

Poland's border with Belarus was fully closed during the Russian-Belarusian Zapad-2025 drills.

Lithuania then extended the closure of part of its airspace along the border with Belarus, introduced initially ahead of Russian-Belarusian Zapad military drills, until 1 December.
