Zelenskyy sees a chance to end war before the US midterm elections

Friday, 27 February 2026 —

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sees a window of opportunity to end Russia's war against Ukraine before the US midterm elections in November.

"Now I think that we have a chance. Between us, what I really think about next year… it depends on these months, if we will have a chance to finish the war before autumn. Before elections, important, influential, elections in the United States. If it will be possible to achieve peace, we will have, now we have this window," Zelenskyy said in an interview with Sky News.

The US midterm elections will take place in November.

"The United States is even more stronger than they think about themselves. And I think so really. And they really have pressure on Putin. They can stop this war," Zelenskyy said.

He also described his relationship with his US counterpart Donald Trump as not easy, but stressed that Ukraine's relationship goes beyond personalities.

On 26 February, Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council and head of Ukraine's negotiating delegation, said that during a meeting with representatives of the US president, the parties discussed preparations for trilateral talks and post-war recovery issues.

Following the meetings, Umierov, together with Davyd Arakhamiia, leader of the Servant of the People parliamentary faction, and US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held a joint call with President Zelenskyy.

Afterwards, Zelenskyy said the next round of trilateral talks is set to take place in Abu Dhabi in early March.
