Sweden provides Ukraine with additional US$28m: half to be spent on purchasing American weapons

Sweden is providing an additional contribution of approximately SEK 270 million (approx. US$28.3 million) to a number of multilateral funds and initiatives to support Ukraine. A total of US$14 million of this amount will be directed to the PURL programme for purchasing American weapons.

The government has instructed the Swedish Armed Forces to distribute the financial contributions among various funds and initiatives totalling more than SEK 270 million.

"Sweden's support is long-term, substantial and based on Ukraine's needs and priorities. Through further support for the PURL initiative, Ukraine can quickly gain access to high-priority American assets. These include air defence systems and ammunition that enable Ukraine to continue to defend itself against Russia's constant attacks," Defence Minister Pål Jonson said.

This is the fifth time Sweden has made a contribution under the PURL initiative. Including this new contribution, Sweden's total funding provided under PURL amounts to US$552 million.

In July, the Norwegian government announced the allocation of NOK 3 billion (€268 million) to strengthen Ukraine's air defence, including under the PURL programme for purchasing American weapons.

On 25 August, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had received Patriot air defence system missiles from partners.
