Terminating the Minsk Agreements: The French View

Wednesday, 16 February 2022

European Pravda’s editor Sergiy Sydorenko interviewed Valéria Faure-Muntian, a member of the French National Assembly. In it, she heads a group considered to be Ukraine-friendly. She is also an expert on the country.

Although she is still part of Macron’s team, she will not stand for election this summer, meaning that Ms. Faure-Muntian is not too politically or diplomatically restrained. That made the interview even more interesting.

Here is what Valéria Faure-Muntian said:

"We started to talk more about Ukraine, which is now viewed as equal: you are much less perceived as a victim."

"The situation dramatically changed in November. Ukraine is once again perceived as a victim. The hysteria in America and England contributed to such a perception far more than the Russian military."

"If Russia was to launch a full-scale attack, it would be incredibly difficult for it to do so and would result in big losses. Say, Russia conquered Ukraine. It would not have the means to rebuild it. Russia does not have enough money. The West will not help. In other words, they cannot pull off an all-out war."

"The Russian military appeared at the Ukrainian border in spring 2021 before the Crimean Platform took place… I want to ask Joe Biden: how come they reacted like this only in November? Why now, during the elections in Germany and France, in the winter when we need gas?"

"Putin issued his ultimatum in mid-December. By then the West had already been discussing new sanctions against Russia."

"No one can ban Ukraine or some other country from acceding to NATO. It is an open organization. It makes no sense to discuss this."

"Putin systematically leads the negotiations with Ukraine into a dead end. We understand that perfectly well."

"I cannot imagine Ukraine turning into a federation. It is a very long path. It is unable to function as a federation in the near future."

Ms. Valéria Faure-Muntian thinks that Ukraine should leave the Minsk Agreements because there is nothing to agree on: "We have heard that Ukraine does not want to implement the agreements. As a result, Ukraine’s reputation and credibility take a toll."
