Midterm Elections in the US: Does It Change a Lot for Ukraine

Monday, 9 May 2022

As early as November 8, the midterm election will be held in the United Statesю435 seats in the House of Representatives, a third of the Senate (33 seats), and local elections will be contested.

The Republicans need only five extra seats to get a majority in the House of Representatives and one extra seat to get the Senate.

It seems to be a likely scenario. It has become an American tradition that the ruling party loses a majority in the midterm election. If it happens, the Republicans will have the right to block President Biden's legislative agenda or impose their own, thereby reducing the chances of the incumbent president for re-election.

And the midterm elections are a litmus test for President Biden, as he has already announced that he will run in the 2024 presidential election.

The recent polls show a significant problem with President Biden's ratings, after a sharp rise in energy and food prices in the US.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has certainly changed the focus of the US election campaign. On the one hand, this is a clear manifestation of support for democracy, and on the other hand, it reduces the emphasis on domestic issues, which may harm the results of the November election.

At first glance, the election battles are not able to affect the level of support for Ukraine, as both parties place great emphasis on Ukraine. Moreover, support for Ukraine is perhaps the only issue that unites Republicans and Democrats today.

The question of whether Ukraine will benefit from a Republican majority in Congress also remains open. Despite some progress in rebuilding the economy and creating a record number of jobs, Americans remain dissatisfied with the Democrats.
