What Does Ukraine Expect from NATO Summit in Madrid

Wednesday, 8 June 2022

Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba admitted that he does not expect any positive decisions for Ukraine during the upcoming NATO summit in Madrid set to take place on June 28-30.

Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, the Minister said that the criticism of the Alliance voiced in Ukraine is justified.

"I was criticized for saying that NATO as an organization has done nothing for Ukraine after Feb.23, 2022. I then requested to show evidence of what the Alliance did. It turned out there were no decisions to show," he noted.

To that end, the Minister explained that he does not expect any breakthrough decisions at the Alliance’s summit unless some sort of "miracle" happens. He added that he would be happy to be proven wrong and see these breakthrough decisions take place, yet he considers such a scenario 'miraculous'.

"Naturally, we will hear words of encouragement and solidarity, but I don’t see any signs of powerful decisions being prepared by the Alliance concerning Ukraine or even the Black Sea security," the Minister said.

This is not the first time Kuleba criticizes NATO for subpar decisions.

Previously, we reported that Georgia was invited to participate in the upcoming NATO summit in Spain alongside Ukraine. However, Kyiv is yet to decide who will attend it due to logistical considerations.

At the same time, the Ukrainian government hints at Ukraine’s NATO membership path as Russia continues to threaten Finland and Sweden.
