NATO Allies May Be Willing to Agree to Simplified Accession for Ukraine – German Defence Minister

Friday, 16 June 2023

NATO allies may be ready to remove some hurdles on Ukraine’s path to the military alliance.

"There are increasing signs that everyone will be able to agree on this," The Guardian quotes Boris Pistorius, the German Defence Minister, who said this to journalists in Brussels when asked about reports that the US is open to permitting Kyiv to forgo a formal candidacy process required of some other nations in the past.

"I would be open for this," he said.

NATO has ruled out Ukraine joining while it is actively at war.

As previously reported, US President Joe Biden supports NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's proposal that Ukraine does not need to implement the Membership Action Plan (MAP) to join the Alliance.

As known, at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, Ukraine is also seeking to achieve clear wording regarding the prospect of membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, while criticising the decision of the Bucharest summit, which is "as far removed from reality as possible".

In addition, Ukraine expects the summit participants to provide security guarantees for the period before membership in the Alliance and not as an alternative to joining it.
