Meloni: Ukraine Needs Real Security Guarantees

Wednesday, 5 July 2023

The positions of Poland and Italy coincide regarding Ukraine, with Rome advocating the need for real security guarantees to Kyiv.

"In times of crisis, we must stand united. Starting with Ukraine, where Italian and Polish positions converge. We cannot accept Russian aggression against Ukraine and we will do everything possible to stop it," Sky TG24 quotes Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as saying during her visit to Warsaw on Wednesday.

She added that Italy will continue to stand by Ukraine, supporting it in all directions.

"We agree with Poland on the need for real security guarantees for Ukraine. Moreover, the conflict carries with it a domino effect for which Europe must provide answers," Meloni noted.

According to the German outlet FAZ, an agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine could be signed before the NATO summit, scheduled for July 11-12 in Vilnius.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised that Ukraine really needs security guarantees – not as an alternative to membership, but while Ukraine is not a NATO member.
