Polish President Andrzej Duda has stated that for Warsaw, obtaining permission for the exhumation of all victims of the Volyn Tragedy is crucial in matters related to Polish-Ukrainian relations.

As reported by PAP, in an interview with Polish media, answering about expectations from Ukraine regarding historical issues, the president stated that it is highly important for Poland that every deceased individual has a proper burial.

"So, we demand the opportunity to conduct search operations. So that the remains can be identified and buried with dignity. So that families can light a candle on the grave and pray," said Andrzej Duda.

He added that this process is "complex," and it's difficult to predict when further progress will take place.

"I've been striving for this since the beginning of my presidential term. What we managed to obtain from President Zelenskyy regarding this matter – his presence in Lutsk and honouring the memory of the deceased – is something we couldn't count on before... I would like us to value this step by the President of Ukraine," noted Duda, recalling that he himself laid flowers there earlier.

Polls indicate that over 60% of Poles want Ukraine to allow unrestricted exhumation of victims of the Volyn Tragedy.

In July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish President Andrzej Duda visited Lutsk to jointly honour the victims of the Volyn Tragedy.

The heads of the Ministries of Culture of Poland and Ukraine – Piotr Gliński and Oleksandr Tkachenko – jointly paid tribute to the memory of "all innocent victims of the Volyn Tragedy" on its 80th anniversary.
