Bulgarian Parliament Approves Supply of 100 APCs to Ukraine

Wednesday, 22 November 2023

The National Assembly of Bulgaria has ratified an intergovernmental agreement between Sofia and Kyiv, which provides for the supply of 100 written off armoured personnel carriers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria to Ukraine.

According to Nova.bg, with this decision, Bulgarian MPs ratified the agreement between their Foreign Ministry and the Defence Ministry of Ukraine about "free supply of armoured vehicles".

The decision was supported by 152 MPs from the coalition parties – GERB-SDS, We Continue The Change, Movement for Rights and Freedoms and There Is Such a Nation. Socialists and the members of pro-Russian Revival party voted against the decision.

The agreement was made back in July of this year, signed in Sofia in August and on 13 November in Ukraine. Since it concerns military and technical cooperation, it must be additionally ratified by the Bulgarian Parliament.

The agreement was signed with a warning that it started to be applied even before the ratification. Earlier, Bulgaria said that the APCs would be sent to Ukraine in September-October.

As we reported earlier, APCs were in storage of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria since the 1980s. This is the first case when the Bulgarian side supplied Kyiv with armoured equipment directly, not through mediators as it was doing before.
