Another Lorry Driver Dies at Blocked Polish-Ukrainian Checkpoint

Thursday, 23 November 2023

Another Ukrainian driver has died in Poland near the Korczowa-Krakowiec checkpoint, where Polish hauliers are blocking the border.

Accroding to Suspilne, Volodymyr Balin, Vice President of the Association of International Road Hauliers of Ukraine, said that the driver, who has not been named, died last night in Korczowa at a parking lot. His lorry had Kharkiv licence plates.

"I understand that most likely it is due to physiology, but one way or another, the stress they are getting because of this strike, because they are forced to live in cabs and it is not clear when they will be able to get to Ukraine, adds to the negative and causes certain situations. The situation will be dealt with by doctors and law enforcement agencies, but it is a fact," Balin said.

On 11 November, a Ukrainian driver who was planning to cross the border died in his lorry in front of the Dorohusk-Yahodyn checkpoint.

Rafał Mekler, the campaign organiser to block checkpoints on the border with Ukraine and head of the Lublin branch of the far-right Confederation party, announced that Polish hauliers intend to extend the protest until 1 February 2024.

Polish hauliers started blocking the three border crossings with Ukraine on 6 November, including Rava Ruska-Hrebenne, Yahodyn-Dorohusk and Krakowiec-Korczowa.

The Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, together with specialised associations and hauliers, set up an aid headquarters to provide food, drinking water, medicines and fuel to the blocked Ukrainian drivers.
