Germany to Send Fighter Jets to Romania to Support the NATO Mission – Reuters

Thursday, 9 November 2023

Germany will deploy four Eurofighter jets to Romania in late November in support of NATO's air patrol mission.

Reuters, citing a security source, said that the first of 80 German troops to be stationed at a military base near Constanța will leave for Romania on 9 November.

These actions were preceded by Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, after which drone wreckage was found in Romania, increasing security risks for NATO.

The German Air Force has previously supported the Alliance's mission to police Romania's airspace. NATO has increased its military presence on the eastern flank following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

At the end of September, it was reported that Romania was moving air defence systems closer to its villages on the Danube bordering Ukraine due to incidents involving the downed drones used by Russia to attack Ukrainian territory.

There were also media reports that Romania would soon receive a modern anti-drone defence system.

Romania began to build shelters in the border areas with Ukraine because of increasing threats to the population, and residents received the first air-raid notifications during another air attack by Russia on Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
