Orbán insists that Putin-Trump meeting in Hungary will take place

Tuesday, 28 October 2025 —

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán claims that the summit in Budapest between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin will still take place.

As reported by Index, Orbán noted the summit in Budapest will take place, but its date has been postponed for now: "What is delayed will still happen".

"Negotiations are ongoing, and it is a fact that a peace summit will take place in Budapest," Orbán added.

Meanwhile, he was unable to say when this meeting would take place.

"Let's look at the scenario of the last such major peace summit. It took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where peace in the Middle East was finally concluded, where the parties, including the Americans, negotiated for a long time and then announced on Saturday that the agreement would be signed on the following Monday. That's how we should imagine it," Orbán said.

US President Donald Trump has so far changed his mind about meeting Putin in Budapest and admitted he was disappointed with the pace of talks with Russia.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó accused the "pro-war elite" of trying to derail the planned Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest.

Putin himself, commenting on Trump's statement about cancelling the bilateral meeting in Budapest, spoke about its possible "postponement".
