White House: US discusses acquiring Greenland, but military involvement is "always an option"

Wednesday, 7 January 2026 —

US President Donald Trump and his advisers are exploring various options for acquiring Greenland, with the use of military force always being one of the options, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said.

"President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it's vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region.

The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilising the US Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief's disposal," Leavitt said, as quoted by ABC News.

Meanwhile, asked whether US military action in Greenland was something he would be comfortable with, House Speaker Mike Johnson replied: "No, I don't think that's appropriate."

In recent interviews following the US operation in Venezuela, Trump again stated his desire to control Greenland.

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland urged Trump to stop the pressure and threats.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a forceful annexation of Greenland by the United States, if it were to happen, would mean the end of NATO.
