Magyar: Szijjártó is hastily destroying sanctions documents at Foreign Ministry

Monday, 13 April 2026 —

Hungary's incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar has claimed that current Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has not disappeared but is in Budapest, where he is busy destroying important documents related to sanctions.

Szijjártó's non-appearance at former prime minister Viktor Orbán's side had sparked speculation that he had left the country. However, according to Magyar, Szijjártó is at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he arrived at 10:00 with his colleague Eszter Gyarmati and has since been "destroying sanctions documents".

"We know that his people are destroying documents just like in the old communist times. The shredders are working flat out, not only in the ministries but also at other institutions. But this will not help them," Magyar noted at a press conference for international media

"There are many things we do not know; there are numerous international agreements and secret government decisions that we know nothing about," he added.

According to Magyar, Viktor Orbán had taken out loans under unknown conditions, which the winning Tisza party also knows nothing about. Therefore, its top priority will be to obtain all the relevant documents.

Earlier, Hungarian media pointed out that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó had disappeared from public view since the historic defeat of Viktor Orbán's party in the elections.
