Hungary's Magyar: Ukraine's EU accession will be put to referendum, but it won't be any time soon

Hungary's incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar has stated that Ukraine must complete the full process of EU accession negotiations, after which Hungary will hold a referendum on the issue.

Magyar said that Hungary does not support the fast-tracking of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

"It is not possible for a country at war to be admitted to the EU. Such matters cannot be considered without a discussion of all the negotiating chapters," he said.

He stressed that all candidate countries must go through the same process.

"If Ukraine does this, then a referendum will be held in Hungary on whether the EU should admit it. But this will certainly not happen any time soon," he added.

Magyar also indicated that he would not block the EU's €90 billion loan for Ukraine, as the decision has already been made, but confirmed that Hungary will not participate in it.

In addition, he stated that Hungary will continue purchasing Russian oil, while also seeking to diversify its energy supplies.
