"Stay away": Trump responds curtly to NATO offer of help with Strait of Hormuz

Friday, 17 April 2026 —

US President Donald Trump has told NATO allies to stay away after they offered assistance in addressing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Now that the Hormuz Strait situation is over, I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help. I TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY, UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO LOAD UP THEIR SHIPS WITH OIL. They were useless when needed, a Paper Tiger!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that in line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has been declared fully open for the duration of the truce.

In response to this announcement, Trump stated that the blockade of Iranian ports will remain fully in force until the US-Iran agreement is implemented 100%.

Trump said earlier that he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US will reexamine the necessity of its NATO membership when the conflict in Iran is concluded.
