Zelenskyy reveals details of meeting with German chancellor on G7 sidelines

Tuesday, 16 June 2026 —

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed details of his latest meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which took place on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.

Zelenskyy noted on X that during the G7 summit, he and Merz discussed defence support for Ukraine, including further strengthening of Ukraine's air defence, the situation on the battlefield and the results of Ukraine's long-range strikes.

"We also [discussed ways – ed.] to implement the agreements reached at today's G7-Ukraine meeting. It is important that Ukraine's effectiveness on the battlefield and in its long-range capabilities be complemented by effective global pressure on Russia," the Ukrainian president said.

He also thanked Merz for Germany's leadership role in supporting Ukraine's air defence and for backing Ukraine on its path towards EU membership.

On 16 June, Zelenskyy stated that all G7 countries see no willingness on Russia's part to end the war and believe it should be forced into negotiations through sanctions.

Zelenskyy said G7 countries will help Ukraine through the next winter if the war with Russia continues.
