"I'm the boss": Trump arrives nearly an hour late to G7 meeting

Wednesday, 17 June 2026 —

US President Donald Trump arrived nearly an hour late to a meeting of G7 leaders on Wednesday 17 June and upon entering the room, joked that he is "the boss".

Trump entered the room and complained that it was too hot outside. As he was walking over to his seat, he stopped and jokingly remarked: "I'm the boss."

The leaders' meeting was closed to the press, but Trump suggested that the journalists who had briefly been allowed in to film should stay longer.

"Would you like to stay for the meeting? It's okay with me," Trump said, addressing the journalists. However, the French side immediately asked the media representatives to leave the room.

The G7 leaders are discussing global economic security, supply chains for critical minerals and macroeconomic imbalances on Wednesday.

In a communiqué issued after the first day of the summit, the G7 leaders said they are willing to consider granting licences for the production of interceptor missiles in Ukraine.

Commenting on the G7 leaders' statement, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted a positive change in the tone and assessments regarding Ukraine.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that the US and Trump have changed their position on the war in Ukraine to one that other G7 leaders consider more realistic.
