Russian Foreign Ministry summons Romanian representative

Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Liliana Burda, Romania's chargée d'affaires in Moscow.

As reported by Kremlin-aligned news agency TASS, Burda is to appear at Russia's Foreign Ministry on 27 August.

The reasons for summoning the Romanian diplomat have not yet been disclosed.

At the end of July, Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a member of the Russian diplomatic mission in Bucharest would be declared persona non grata. This came after Romania used a fighter jet to shoot down a drone that had violated its airspace for the third time in three days.

In June, Bucharest closed the Russian consulate general, and last month it declared the Russian consul general persona non grata. This was in response to a Russian drone crashing into a residential building in Galați on 29 May.

Russia retaliated by declaring Romania's consul general persona non grata and closing the country's consulate general in St Petersburg.
