According to early results from the US midterm elections, the Republican Party is losing its majority in the Senate, with the Democrats securing the 51 seats needed to control the chamber.

The Democratic Party has won in states where Senate seats were previously held by Republicans: Texas (for the first time since 1988), Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Kansas and South Carolina.

The party has provisionally secured 51 seats in the Senate, giving it a narrow majority. Republicans currently have 39 seats, as votes are still being counted in many states.

A total of 218 seats is needed to control the House of Representatives.

US President Donald Trump said he was ready to work with the Democrats.

The US election results so far show a clear victory for Democratic candidates, including in constituencies that previously voted Republican.
