No People Willing to Die For Putin in Transnistria, but Risk of Attack from There Exists — Moldovan MP

Monday, 27 February 2023

No people are willing to go to war with Ukraine in unrecognised Transnistria, despite the risk of Russia's attack on Ukraine from there.

Oazu Nantoi, MP of the ruling party of Moldova "Action and Solidarity," in an interview with "European Pravda,"  said that there are no people in Transnistria who are willing to "fight with someone" for Putin's sake or die for Putin's sake.

"Let me explain what "Transnistria" is. It is a narrow strip of land, a depressed region with more than 300,000 people, of which 140,000 are retired. The bandit regime rules there and does large-scale smuggling. To continue its existence, this regime had to demonstrate its loyalty to Moscow as a so-called "outpost of Russia," noted Nantoi.

According to him, no people are willing to fight in the ranks of the Russian troops in Transnistria.

"The Operational Group of Russian Forces in Transnistria consists of more than 70% people born there, on the left bank of the river Dniester. Yes, they have Russian citizenship but joined the Operational Group for the salary, not to fight with someone and die for Putin. That's why the morale in the Russian Armed Forces, not to mention the so-called Transnistrian Army, is quite low," added Nantoi.

The MP considers the narratives spread by Moscow about Ukraine's alleged preparation of provocations in Transnistria as attempts to intimidate.

"Therefore, I am inclined to believe that Moscow, helplessly observing Moldova's partnership with the EU, the US, and NATO, is trying to threaten us. Russia acts according to the principle of "strong back, weak mind," but their strength is no longer same good. So these statements of the Ministry of Defence, or "Minaggressions" of Russia on the preparation of military operations is an element of information warfare in a situation where Russia is rapidly losing leverage even on Transnistria, not to mention the Republic of Moldova," Nantoi said.

However, he emphasised that these signals cannot be ignored either, given that Russian propaganda has its own "fifth column" in Moldova.

Nantoi believes that Ukraine has the right to consider a military scenario in Transnistria but will not do that.
