Pope Francis's Ambassador for Peace in Ukraine to Visit Kyiv

Monday, 5 June 2023

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Pope Francis' ambassador for peace in Ukraine, will visit Ukraine on 5-6 June.

"Referring to previous messages from the Holy See, we inform you that on 5-6 June 2023, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, will visit Kyiv as an envoy of the Holy Father Francis," the Holy See said in a message.

As noted, the main purpose of this visit is to listen carefully to the Ukrainian authorities about possible ways to achieve a just peace and to support gestures of humanity that will help ease tensions.

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi called the war a "pandemic" and said that all Christians are urged to be peacemakers.

Pope Francis asked the head of the Italian Episcopal, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, to create a peacekeeping mission for the war in Ukraine. The Pope probably discussed this mission during his visit to Hungary in April, but no details have been revealed yet.
