Poland to Repair Leopard 2 Tanks for Ukraine

Monday, 24 July 2023

On Monday, the spokesman of the German Defence Ministry, Mitko Müller, confirmed that Berlin has reached an agreement with Warsaw to build a maintenance and repair hub for Leopard 2 tanks damaged in the battlefield in Ukraine.

The German Defence Ministry representative described the German-Polish efforts to organise the hub as successful. He stated, "We welcome the fact that now Ukrainian Leopard 2A4 tanks can also be repaired in Poland," Ukrinform quotes Müller.

Müller also did not rule out the possibility that tanks of more modern modifications, such as the Leopard 2A5 and 2A6, could also be repaired outside of Germany in the future.

A few days ago, the Polish Minister of Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak, announced that a maintenance and repair hub for Leopard 2 tanks received by Ukraine was opened at the Bumar-Łabędy plant in Gliwice.

Previously, the German media reported that Germany intended to break off negotiations on the creation of a service centre for Leopard tanks in Poland.

The centre was supposed to open in late May. After talks with Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak in April, his German counterpart Boris Pistorius said both sides had reached the final stage of implementation.
