Russia Lost over 300,000 Soldiers in Ukraine – NATO Secretary General

Wednesday, 29 November 2023

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, has reported that Russia’s losses of personnel in Ukraine exceed 300,000 soldiers.

Speaking about the consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine at the press conference after NATO Foreign Affairs Ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Stoltenberg noted that Russia has become weaker from political, military and economic points of view.

"Russia has lost a significant number of its conventional forces: hundreds of aircrafts, thousands of tanks and over 300,000 of personnel," he said.

To indicate the losses, he used the term "casualties", which may include both killed and injured.

He stressed that as a result of its gamble in Ukraine, Russia is losing influence in the Caucasus and in Central Asia and is becoming more and more dependent on China; its income from selling power resources has decreased, hundreds of foreign companies have left Russia, the operation of the banking system is complicated due to the sanctions, and within the course of 2022, over a million people have left Russia.

Stoltenberg also revealed what he considers to be Ukraine’s success in its 2023 campaign despite a nearly static contact line.

He stated nevertheless that Ukraine should be ready for the intensification of combat action and more airstrikes.
