Romanian port evacuated after drone explodes near oil terminal

Friday, 5 June 2026 —

The Romanian port of Constanța has been urgently evacuated after a naval drone exploded there.

As reported by Digi24, the incident occurred on the morning of 5 June near berths No. 77-78 at the port of Constanța. The authorities activated a "red" response plan. The port was evacuated and local residents were advised to seek shelter.

Sources told Digi24 that the drone got stuck in a pollution-control barrier a few hundred metres from the oil terminal.

Early reports indicate there are no casualties or persons injured in the explosion. Digi24 reported that the drone was Ukrainian and was carrying dozens of kilogrammes of explosives. Its detonation was not controlled. It remains unclear how the drone reached the Romanian port.

President Nicușor Dan was informed of the incident aboard a Spartan aircraft as he travelled to Montenegro for the EU-Western Balkans Summit. Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was also briefed on the situation and is expected to visit the Ministry of the Interior.

Romania's Ministry of Defence reported on 5 June that an unknown naval drone exploded in the port of Constanța. It said naval drones of this type are used in the war in Ukraine.

On the night of 28-29 May, a Russian attack drone crashed into the roof of an apartment block in the city of Galați, Romania, and exploded, breaking through the roof and causing a fire in the hallway of a top-floor flat. Two people were injured.

This is currently the most serious incident involving Russian attack drones entering Romanian territory.
