F-16 shoots down drone that entered Romanian territory

Friday, 24 July 2026 —

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet has shot down a drone that violated the country's airspace on 24 July.

President Nicusor Dan reported on X that the incident occurred at approximately 11:00 on the morning of 24 July.

The Romanian president said the area was uninhabited, which allowed the pilot to open fire without any risk.

"Teams of experts from the relevant agencies are currently surveying the area to establish all the circumstances of the incident," Dan added.

During a Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of 28-29 May, a drone crashed into a 10-storey residential building in the Romanian city of Galați. Two people were taken to hospital and 70 residents were evacuated. The drone was identified as a Russian Geran-2 type loitering munition.
