EU to provide Ukraine with €1.4bn in proceeds from frozen Russian assets in fifth tranche
The European Union will provide Ukraine with a fifth tranche worth €1.4 billion, funded by proceeds generated from frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia. The money will be used to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities and resilience.
The European Commission announced that the EU had received another €1.4 billion in proceeds generated from immobilised assets of the Central Bank of Russia on 3 August. These funds will now be transferred to Ukraine as the fifth tranche under the initiative.

In total, since the mechanism was introduced, Ukraine has received or is expected to receive €8 billion from proceeds generated by frozen Russian assets.
"Once again we wake up to the news of horrible atrocities by Russia through its aerial attacks on Ukraine. Russia must pay for the destruction it has caused. And we are using the proceeds from the immobilised Russian assets to make sure it does. We are making a further €1.4 billion of them available to Ukraine," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said the funds will be used to strengthen Ukraine's defence and reinforce the country's resilience.
"The response to Russia's terror must be a stronger Ukraine. Russia must pay for every new crime it commits," he said.
The previous, fourth tranche was transferred in March 2026
On 30 July, the European Commission disbursed €3.47 billion to Ukraine under the defence window of the €90 billion loan programme.
The European Commission has also said that Ukraine can expect at least one additional "defence tranche" during August.
