NATO is aware of drone incident near Ukrainian aircraft in Germany

Wednesday, 5 August 2026 — , , from Brussels

NATO says it is aware of a drone discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany.

Earlier reports said that on the night of 4-5 August, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was found near a Ukrainian aircraft at the German airport.

"We are aware of this incident," a NATO official told the publication.

According to the official, the incident is being investigated by German authorities.

In December last year, Germany opened a new national drone defence centre to ensure better coordination between the central government and federal state authorities.

German authorities have repeatedly warned that drones pose a security threat following a series of incursions near airports and military facilities this year.
