Poland creates a military brigade for defence on the border with Russia

Monday, 2 November 2026 —

As part of the Polish Territorial Defence Forces, a special brigade will deal with the defence of the border with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast.

As reported by Polish news portal RMF24, one of the territorial defence brigades is to transform into the Warmia-Masuria Border Guard Unit by the end of this year. It will receive new tasks related to the defence of the border with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast.

The brigade will deal specifically with the defence of the border, rather than its guarding. The Polish army reported that the unit will be reorganised by the end of 2026, but it will achieve full combat readiness within the next two years.

The re-equipment of the servicemen who will make up the brigade is currently underway.

The enhanced guarding of Lithuania's border with the Kaliningrad region will be extended until mid-November.

On 1 October, Russian leader Vladimir Putin confirmed the threats previously sent to NATO countries through Russian embassies: to use Russia's entire arsenal of weapons if anyone decides to attack Kaliningrad or any other Russian region.
