Ukraine's foreign minister outlines which "peace initiatives" are unacceptable for Kyiv

Tuesday, 12 May 2026 —

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has stressed that Ukraine's basic condition for any potential peace agreement with Russia is that Kyiv makes no territorial concessions relative to the current front line.

A member of the audience asked what kind of peace would be acceptable to Ukrainian society. Sybiha replied that it must be a just and lasting peace.

"Ukraine will never accept any formula, any initiative at the cost of our territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Our approach [is as follows]: stay where we are now, sustainable ceasefire – it will open the path for broader peace negotiations," Sybiha said during a discussion at the PISM Strategic Ark conference alongside Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

Radosław Sikorski said that he believes ending the war will become possible only when "Russia – I mean Putin and the people around him – conclude that the aim of rebuilding the Russian empire is unachievable".

Sikorski also suggested earlier that Putin is beginning to think seriously about how much longer he can continue waging his war of aggression against Ukraine.

During the discussion, Sybiha said he sees the need for a "new role for Europe" in peace efforts, partly because the negotiation process had slowed as Washington's attention shifted to the Middle East.
