Trump: Xi didn't say Putin will regret war in Ukraine

Tuesday, 19 May 2026 —

US President Donald Trump has denied media reports that Chinese leader Xi Jinping told him that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may come to regret invading Ukraine.

The Financial Times has reported, citing several people familiar with the outcome of the Xi-Trump summit in Beijing, that the Chinese leader made the remark during wide-ranging talks that touched on Ukraine. Xi's words concerning Putin and his decision to attack Ukraine appear to be more resolute than before.

The US president himself told reporters that Xi had made no such remark.

"He never said that," Trump said.

Trump said earlier that he had discussed the war in Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Beijing last week, and that both leaders agreed they want the fighting to end.

On 15 May, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call with Trump as he was on his way back from China, during which they also discussed the war in Ukraine.
