Hungary welcomes Ukraine's adoption of amendments to education law

Monday, 12 October 2026 —

Hungary has welcomed the Ukrainian parliament's adoption of amendments to the education law.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán's comment followed a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, in Luxembourg.

"We welcome today's important step by the Ukrainian Parliament on minority education rights. A positive result of months of joint work and constructive dialogue," she said on X.

Orbán thanked Ukraine as a partner and called for "this momentum" to be maintained.

On 12 October, the Ukrainian parliament approved amendments to the law on education. The changes are necessary for Hungary to agree to the opening of negotiating clusters 2 and 3 in Ukraine's EU accession talks.

European Pravda reported that the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) is ready to approve the EU's common negotiating positions on the opening of the second and third accession negotiating clusters with Ukraine on Monday 12 October following the adoption of the amendments on minority education rights by the Verkhovna Rada.
