Supreme Court of the Netherlands Ruled on "Scythian Gold" Three Months Ahead of Schedule

Friday, 9 June 2023

The Supreme Court of the Netherlands prioritised the case on "Scythian gold" and ruled on it three months earlier than planned.

On June 9, the Supreme Court issued a final decision in the case, ordering to return the exhibits to Ukraine.

According to Iryna Mudra, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice expressed gratitude to all the state bodies and institutions involved in the case, the teams of Dutch and Ukrainian lawyers, diplomats, and experts for their assistance and professionalism at all stages of the proceedings.

"The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine expresses deep gratitude to the Netherlands for ensuring impartial and objective justice in consideration of this case and also expresses deep respect to the Supreme Court for prioritising the consideration of this case and making a final decision three months earlier than the previously imposed time limit," stated Mudra.

In January, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands preliminarily set a date for the decision on the appeal of the so-called "Crimean museums" regarding the Amsterdam Court of Appeal's decision to return the "Scythian gold" to Ukraine on September 15, 2023.

The Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam obtained on loan the objects from four Crimean museums in 2014. When Russia annexed the peninsula, it became unclear to whom these items should be handed over: the museums in occupied Crimea or Ukraine.

On December 14, 2016, the Amsterdam Court ruled to return the "Scythian gold" to Ukraine, but in January 2017, the Crimean museums started appealing the decision. The court in Amsterdam ruled in favour of Ukraine in 2021.

The "Crimean museums" appealed to the Supreme Court, which on June 9 ruled that the treasures are a cultural heritage of entire Ukraine. With the Supreme Court's decision, the dispute has finally been settled.
