Finland condemns Russian lies about Ukrainian drone attacks launched from Baltic states

Friday, 22 May 2026 —

Finland has said it stands firmly with the Baltic states and condemned Russian disinformation following renewed claims from Moscow that the Baltic states allowed Ukraine to use their territory to launch drone attacks on targets in Russia.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said Russia's false claims targeting Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are part of a broader disinformation campaign.

"Finland stands firmly with all countries targeted by Russian intimidation and falsehoods. Truth and freedom must prevail," she wrote on X.

On 21 May, several other European capitals also said they support the Baltic states and condemned Russia's threats.

The Polish foreign minister stressed that it is entirely clear who the aggressor is and who the victim is. The Belgian foreign minister described Russia's accusations against the Baltic states as "pure fantasy".

After the first incidents involving Ukrainian attack drones entering the airspace of Baltic states, Russian officials began promoting a false narrative claiming that the Baltic countries allow Ukraine to use their airspace for strikes against Russia.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service claimed on 19 May that Ukraine was planning to launch drones on targets in Russia directly from Latvian territory, adding threats that Russia "knows the coordinates of decision-making centres on Latvian territory" and that NATO membership would not protect Latvia.

Estonia and Latvia subsequently once again protested to Russian diplomats, while the presidents of all three Baltic states held talks about incidents involving "stray drones" and threats from Moscow.
